This early 1900’s rule no longer has to stop you when you look through the whites in your closet.
A century and more ago, wearing white was what you did only when you were on vacation during summer, or away for months from your hometown. You wouldn’t wear white to a dinner party, or in the fall. The purpose to this rule was to tell who was acceptable and who wasn’t amongst socialite millionaires. The women who were already “fashion forward” felt it necessary to create dozens of fashion rules that everyone else had to follow. Sounds so silly doesn’t it?
Well, of course not everyone followed these rules. However, over time it became a trend to lock up your whites after Labor Day. Since Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894, it was naturally adopted as the endpoint to summer fashion. Though, you certainly don’t need to agree and like all trends, this one has certainly stuck around for a long time.
In today’s age, and depending on where you live, white may just be the only color you want to wear! Living in Southern California, the heat can continue on through October. I’d hate living in CA if I could’t wear white! Or how about living in Greece? Italy? Once winter rolls around, and with it comes all the gloomy grey skies, whites quickly become a great alternative to a brighter day. If you live in a place with all 4 seasons, then wearing white is not always practical. But if you don’t have much walking to do outside in bad weather and/or you can keep your whites clean, then why not wear [all] white?

September 20, 2016 at 12:35 amSee, now I learned something more about socialite dress codes from the past. I love history, but often fashion is forgotten in the context, however important it might have been in for example showing your wealth and power.
And I agree with you, I love white! However we have 4 seasons here in Sweden and we’re heading towards that “not so practical to wear white”-time of the year, but I haven’t given up my whites quite yet 🙂

September 20, 2016 at 1:34 amSlaying in that white dress! I agree it’s a nice history lesson especially as I always wondered why Americans have the rule to not wear white after Labour Day. White linens are always so nice to wear during hot weather!
